Total lens and accessory compatibility

Although the camera, lens mount, and lenses are new, full compatibility with existing PL mount lenses and ALEXA accessories is a cornerstone of the system's design. A PL-to-LPL adapter offers backward compatibility with all PL mount lenses, be they Super 35 or full frame. The adapter attaches securely to the LPL lens mount without tools, allowing crews to rapidly switch between PL and LPL lenses on set. Cinematographers are therefore offered an unlimited lens choice, with complete lens metadata accessible from LDS-2, LDS-1 or /i lenses.

For even further cross-system compatibility, an LPL lens mount can be fitted to existing ALEXA, ALEXA Mini and AMIRA cameras. ARRI Signature Primes and other future LPL mount lenses can, therefore, be used for both Super 35 and large format on productions combining the two.

ALEXA LF is based on the proven, robust ALEXA camera design, so most existing accessories will work right out of the box. Since all other features and the user interface are the same as in the ALEXA SXT W—including the integrated wireless video transmitter and the user interface—crews will adapt quickly.

Is the Arri Alexa Mini LF Netflix approved?

Since the ALEXA Mini LF uses the same sensor and the same recording formats as the ALEXA LF (which is Netflix approved), we do not see any reason why the ALEXA mini LF will not be Netflix approved soon.

Can I upgrade my Alexa Mini for an Alexa Mini LF?

No, since essentially everything in and around the Mini LF is different from the ALEXA Mini. An upgrade would be more expensive than buying a new ALEXA Mini LF. However, we offer a trade-in program that allows you to trade in your ALEXA Classic/XT/SXT, ALEXA Mini or AMIRA when purchasing an ALEXA Mini LF. Please note that capacities for trade-in might be limited.


What sensor are you using in the Alexa Mini LF?

The ALEXA Mini LF uses the same sensor as the ALEXA LF. This is the ALEV 3 A2X sensor, which has the same photosite size and type as the Super 35 ARRI digital cameras. The electronics of the Mini LF (sensor board and processing boards) are different from the ALEXA LF, in order to meet the size, power and cooling requirements of such a small camera. While this does not affect image quality, it does affect the maximum frame rate achievable in the different recording formats.

Will the Alexa Mini LF replace the Alexa LF and Alexa Mini?

No, each camera has its own unique features and role to play on set. The ALEXA LF can shoot in LF Open Gate ARRIRAW up to 90fps, and in LF 2.39:1 4.5K at 150fps: far greater frame rates than the ALEXA Mini LF. It is also the ideal camera for assistants with four independent monitoring outputs, multiple accessory power options, built-in wireless video, and a dedicated control panel.

The ALEXA Mini remains an ideal choice for Super 35 production due to its high framerate ability; we’re not expecting your investment in the most popular camera on set to disappear overnight. What recording formats and frame rates does the Alexa Mini LF support?

What would be the size and weight of the Alexa Mini LF?

The ALEXA Mini LF (left) has the same dimensions and the same mounting points as the ALEXA Mini (right), except for the media bay on the camera left side. Our current prototypes weigh in at 2.6 Kg/5.7 lbs for the camera body with LPL lens mount and 800 g/1.7 lbs for the MVF-2 viewfinder.

What is the Alexa Mini LF input voltage and power draw?

The ALEXA Mini LF has a voltage input range from 11 V to 34 V. Therefore, it can be easily powered by any 14.4 V on-board battery as well as by 24 V on-board batteries.

The ALEXA Mini LF has a power draw slightly higher than the ALEXA Mini, we estimate currently at around 65 W when recording ARRIRAW at 24 fps with the MVF-2 viewfinder connected. Note: electronic accessories will increase power draw based on the accessories’ power draw.

Which recording media can I use with the Alexa Mini LF?

The ALEXA Mini LF supports one new recording media, the small and affordable Codex Compact Drive 1 TB. It contains one industrial SSD (no RAID) in a tough enclosure and the drive's full capacity of 1 TB is available for ARRIRAW and ProRes recording. The drive will be formatted by the ALEXA Mini LF in the UDF format for ARRIRAW and ProRes. Therefore, both ARRIRAW and ProRes can be recorded onto the same media without reformatting or switching drives. The drive is capable of a sustained write rate of 8 Gb/s. We will also use this media for future cameras.


Lens options for ARRI large-format cameras

Optimized for large-format lenses, the LPL lens mount fitted to ALEXA LF and ALEXA Mini LF cameras accepts ARRI Signature Primes, ARRI Rental DNA LF and 65 format optics, and third-party LPL lenses. The PL-to-LPL adapter, which attaches securely to the LPL lens mount without tools, offers backwards compatibility with all PL mount lenses, be they Super 35 or full frame. LDS-2 or /i lens metadata is accessible via the LPL mount, and LDS-1 or /i via the PL-to-LPL adapter. ARRI’s Frame Line and Lens Illumination Tool, available in the Learn & Help/Tools section of the ARRI website, illustrates how much of the large-format sensor is covered by a given lens.

Other manufacturers, such as Panavision and Vantage, offer proprietary lens mounts for the ALEXA LF and ALEXA Mini LF cameras, to support their own lens ranges. Cinematographers therefore have an almost unlimited lens choice when shooting with ARRI large-format cameras.

Lens format for ALEXA Mini LF Camera

Is there an issue with the second WiFi antenna being so close to the operator?

The ALEXA Mini LF has two WiFi antennas: one integrated with the camera body in the front and one external stubby antenna above the media bay. The ALEXA Mini LF is CE and FCC approved and all antenna radiation levels are within legal limits. If an operator is still concerned about the second WiFi antenna (the one above the media bay), they can remove it, which will shut down power to that connector. The WiFi range will obviously be more limited in this case. Alternatively, the second antenna can be offset using an SMA cable and the antenna can be placed somewhere else on the rig – which is not a bad idea anyway as that means less interference from the metal of the camera and accessories.

Both SDI outputs carry uncompressed video with embedded audio and metadata. SDI 1 and 2 can be either “clean” (HD or UHD) or “processed” (only HD). Clean is an image without any overlays (status, false color, zebra, framelines, etc.). Both SDIs can be clean at the same time. If one SDI is switched to processed, the other can be a clone of that one, or has to be clean.
